Falconry

The English School of Falconry Bird of Prey & Conservation Centre is set in the beautiful grounds of Shuttleworth. With one of the largest collections of birds of prey in the country, the centre belongs to Phil, Maggie and Emma Gooden.

Phil and his daughter Emma, Head Falconer, have over 50 years experience in falconry. The sport has been practised since 3000bc and the family share with many others a love of the sport.
The Centre opened in 2000 and is home to many different species of owls, hawks, eagles, falcons, vultures and even pelicans. With a real family atmosphere there is plenty to do and see at the centre including; two different flying displays at 12.00pm and 3.00pm between the months of February and October, 11.15am Eagle meet and greet, 2.00pm have a go at flying a bird, the chance to handle some of the birds after the displays, a walk through barn owl aviary, children’s play ground, picnic area,  plus plenty more.

As well as the centre, the school can offer many different experience days, giving you a more hands on approach to the birds. The Introduction and Activity Day is a full day handling and flying all different species of birds, hold the owls, fly an eagle, take a hawk for a walk, feed the pelicans and fly the vultures. The Owl Experience involves spending a morning handling and flying different species of owls and the hawking day allows you to hunt with your own Harris Hawk for the day. New for 2010 we are offering our Eagle Experiences, a full day handling and flying the giants of the sky, these include Bald Eagles, Martial Eagle, White-tailed Sea Eagle, African Fish Eagle plus many more.

During the show we will be in the main arena giving a flying display with falcons, hawks, eagles and owls, and why not come and visit our trade stand where we will be offering advice to anyone wishing to take up the art of falconry, answer any questions you may have, have your photo taken with one of our birds or just to come over and say hello.
